Hi,
Welcome! This summer we will be taking a trip to a destination known as Math EnCOUNTERs 2008. Math EnCOUNTers will meet on Monday June 23-June 26th from 1:30-4:45 p.m. At Eastport Learning at Eastport Learning Center. As we prepare for our journey we would like to get to know all of our travelers. Some of you are new travelers and some of you are returning travelers. On this blog introduce yourself by sharing with us what types of journeys or excursions you enjoy taking. Identify yourself as a new traveler or a returning traveler and describe what you believe is a math encounter. Share any past trips you may have had or a trip you wish to take. Also on our first day of Math EnCOUNTers please bring a souvenir from a trip you have had and be ready to share with the group how your souvenir connects to a math encounter.

I am Deb Pratt and excursions I like to take are trips to the beach, to amusement parks, bookstores and to the shopping mall. Most of these trips are taken with my eleven year old twins Lily and Ladd. I also like to take excursions to far away places such as Hawaii, Bahamas, Florida, Califormia and Las Vegas. As you can tell I like to travel to warm places. My most memorable excursion was this past March when my husband Dave and I "Got Mauied" on the beach of Kannapoli in Maui, Hawaii.
I am Mary Jane Eisenhauer and it seems as if my journey into and through teaching has been one extended excursion!! It started while I was growing up in Brussels, Belgium attending a progressive international school and has continued to Chicago where I taught at a university demonstration school and on to Indiana where I found myself at PNC. From kindergarten to college (as a student and as a teacher), I have encountered many amazing children and adults who have taught me lots. Of course, the best teachers I have are my own children, Frannie (10), George (8) and Harriet (5). We enjoy visiting my extended family all over the country, but our best excursions are the everyday adventures!
Hi! I'm Terri Parry and excursions I like to take are to the beach, sporting events such as Purdue football games and Cub's games. I also enjoy visiting restaurants in the Harbor Country area. This last month most of my excursions have been to see my new granddaughter Madelyn Marie. My husband and I also enjoy going to new places during spring break. The last few destinations have been to Florance, Italy, Key West, and the island of Curacoa.
I am Mary Shepperd and this is my first time at the Math Encounter workshop. I like to take excursions in my garden, taking our dog for a walk and doing cross stitch. My past excursions this year have been visiting my daughters with my husband in at Purdue and Indiana State University.
My name is Stephanie Rozinski. I teach special education at Joy Elementary. My summer is busy with my kids who are 9 and almost 12. They are very active in 4-H so we have been working on getting projects and animals ready for fair.
Hi, I'm Nancy Gonzalez and excursions I like to take are trips to Meijers, the beach, Lighhouse mall, wonderful resturants and other far away places. I have been to all the locations that Deb Pratt had mentioned. I go to visit my three daughters, two in college at IU and at Western Michigan in Kalamazoo and my other daughter living in IL.
I am Tracy Lipscomb I like to take trips to the beach, shopping malls, sporting events and concerts. However most of my far away excursions did not occur until I was hired by m.c.a.s. I had never flown before my employment here and since 1996 I have travelled to Toronto, New Orleans, Disney World and St. Louis. My upcoming excursions include travelling to Washington D.C. to celebrate my sorority's 100th anniversary
I am Debbie Wagoner. I am a returning traveler.
i am dorothy brennan. I want to go to tahiti, the orient, constantinople, and ride the marakesh express to kashmir. i think that i should go to tahiti last as i am apt not to come back jsut like mr. christian.
Hi, my name is Sue Cusick. I like to take excursions to the beach and the shopping mall- Kohl's! I enjoy warm places like Florida- just laying around in the sand on the beach.
This is my first year with math encounters, but since I've met Deb, Mary Jane, and Dr. Feikes in previous classes, it seems like I'm just a return visitor. I enjoy taking trips to high-energy locations like Vegas and Disney World. However, my most recent trip was to North Carolina this spring. I went by myself and traveled by car to Savannah, GA and other scenic locations just for some much-needed quiet time. I am hoping to travel to California later this summer and maybe Hawaii next year.
I am Linda Stanford and some of my favorite excursions are quite close to home...along the beach shoreline, Thursday evening concerts at Washington Park, and literacy activities with my grandson at local libraries and MCAS BabyTalk, to name a few. Further afield--Lahina, Maui; Vienna, Capri, and other places in Europe, all hold marvelous memories. Savannah, GA and South Beach in Miami are great USA getaway places for our family.
My name is Samantha and this is my first time at the Math Encounters workshop. I am already greatly enjoying my summer vacation. I finally get to hang out with my eleven month old daughter, Violet Blossom Bellerose (Future Hippie/Yoga Instructor). So far this summer we've gone for long walks, swam in a HUGE 1-ring baby pool, and visited the otters at the Michigan City Zoo. We're having a blast, and I'm sure that the fun will continue!
HI! I am a returning traveller.I enjoy spending a great amount of time outdoors. My goal this summer is to relax and rejuvinate. My last vacation was to Wis. Dells during the tornatoes and floods
(a few weeks agao)! You wanna talk about social learning experiences. This was deffinitely one in which you get to know the other people jammed into the Walmart restrooms with you!
My name is Janeen. I am attending this math workshop for the first time. I've had some fun opportunities to travel overseas to Ghana, South Africa, and China. My favorite summertime activity is visiting my family all over the country. I just spent a week in Ohio. I will also travel to California this summer for a family reunion. Locally, I enjoy Mt. Baldy and the area beaches.
I am Betty. I would like to take a trip with my grandkids to Disney World.
I am Connie Althoff and excurions I enjoy are going to the beach, riding bikes, working-out and getting settled into our new home. My husband and I have enjoyed many excursions during our 28 years of marriage to Greece, Italy, Bermuda, Hawaii,& Japan. With 3 teenagers and 2 college bound we now keep our journeys mostly to see family in Colorado, California and the East coast. I enjoy teaching Special Needs students in K - 3rd grades. I am ejoying my life excusion as life moves forward!
I am Debbie Wagoner. Most of my excursions are driving to South Bend and Mishawaka to visit my family. In two weeks I will be flying to Houston, Texas to visit my aunt.
I am Angie Herbert and this is my first time in math encounters. I love taking weekend excursions to southern Indiana in the summertime. My fiance and I go to a private campground on the Ohio River where we enjoy boating and spending time with family. I have a couple of bigger excursions coming up in the fall and winter. This October, I will be getting married in Anderson, IN, and in December I will be going to St. Kitts and Nevis in the Carribean to celebrate my honeymoon!
I am Deni Newton and this is my first time with math encounters. I haven't traveled much this year as I am busy renovating a home my husband and I recently bought and gutted. I do my traveling at Barnes and Nobel or Borders where I have been known to spend hours traveling and visting some spectacular places via books. It saves on gas too.
TIMED TESTS FOR TYKES?
I agree with the teacher that math time tests can be stressful for young children. In the past our school had a set time for timed tests that were conducted on the intercom. It got too difficult to find a unified time to this so it was dropped. I think it is best to play games that the children can use manipulatives to solve the fact problems. Then as they continue these games the memorization of these facts come naturally. We have a computer program called Math Facts in a Flash where children have five minutes to complete 40 problems.(You can actually set the amount of time.) The children progress as they achieve each level. There is no pressure with this "timed test" and the children seem to enjoy it.
I am Brigid. This is my first time being involved in math encounters. I love excursions to the beach and anything outdoors. I have taken a few excursions throughout the US and Europe, but I mostly enjoy being home with my husband son and large family. We are currently staying with my parents, which is an excursion in itself being that there are usually at least 12 people living there together! I look forward to taking a few excursions this summer to concerts in Indianapolis and Chicago and visiting family in northern Wisconsin.
I can see from the posts that we have several things in common. Many of us like to shop, spend time with family, and travel far and near. Mary Jane and I enjoyed being reunited with our returning travelers and meeting our new travelers as we embark on math enCOUNTers 2008.
I have mixed feelings about the "timed tests". I do give them to my kindergarten students. Iuse them as a fun way for them to learn their math facts. The focus is for each child to improve based on his/her ability. I began to consider whether or not children feel anxiety or pressured. It is not my intention to pressure children into learning their basic math facts or any other concept for that matter.
Time Tests and chalkboard races are the things that made me a math phobic.
